Fireworks can be a fun part of July 4th celebrations, but they can also cause severe injuries if they’re not handled carefully. Here are a few fireworks tips that can help keep your 4th of July festivities injury free:

-Purchase fireworks from reliable sources. Make sure they’re legal in your area, and read the warning labels and directions before lighting them. Do not experiment with homemade fireworks!

-Prepare a safe place outdoors, preferably one that has a large flat surface. Make sure the area is clear of other fireworks, combustible materials like dried wood or grass, and away from buildings.

-Keep bystanders a safe distance away from where the fireworks are being set off – especially when they’re being lit.

-Make sure children are under adult supervision at all times.  Even fireworks that are considered “safe” for children are dangerous when not handled properly.  Sparklers, for instance, burn at 2000 degrees Fahrenheit, and can cause serious burns if they’re picked up or stepped on before they cool off completely. (Last year, sparklers were the top cause of injuries – 50% higher than even firecrackers!)

-Keep water nearby, like a bucket or garden hose, for emergencies and for dousing fireworks that don’t go off.

-Don’t ignite fireworks in any sort of container or place any portion of your body directly over fireworks as they are being lit.

-Never point or throw fireworks at another person.

-If a firework malfunctions, do not attempt to relight or handle it.  Douse and soak it with water – then throw it away.

From all of us at Davis-Moore, have a happy – and safe – Fourth of July!
