March is Safety Sales Event month at Davis-Moore, which means that every week we’ll be highlighting a different vehicle safety tip. This week we’re going to focus on something taught when you FIRST learn to drive, but something that many of us let slip as we get a bit older and a bit more comfortable behind the wheel: Defensive Driving. The National Safety Council’s Defensive Driving Course states Defensive Driving as “driving to save lives, time, and money, in spite of the conditions around you and the actions of others.” Defensive Driving goes beyond the rules of the road and mastery of the mechanics of driving-it focuses on anticipating and avoiding dangerous situations. Here are a few tips to becoming a better Defensive Driver:

DO NOT do unto others.
There will unfortunately always be crazy people on the road, swerving in and out of lanes and cutting others off in their haste to get to their desired destination. Don’t play their game by trying to cut them off to get ahead of them, resort to blaring your horn, or hand gestures-these only make the situation worse, and even more dangerously, they distract you from the road! When you find yourself on the road with someone driving dangerously, step up your awareness of what is going on around you and stay out of the way. Give aggressive drivers plenty of room to get around you.

NEVER insist on your right of way if another driver is challenging you.
Just because you follow the rules of the road and there are laws to ensure that our roads are safe-not everyone abides by these rules as they should. Even if the right of way is yours by law, custom or common courtesy, always remember that the number one objective is to get to your destination safely. When someone plows ahead of you, make sure to keep your ego in check and yield anyway.

Overcome overconfidence behind the wheel.
How many of us have been known to say “I’m a great driver, it’s everyone else on the road that is dangerous!” We all think that we are good drivers, but make sure that if you make that kind of claim that you can back it up by your actions. Slow down, obey traffic laws and always wear your seat belt. If everyone on our roadways followed those easy tips and treated each other with courtesy, our streets would be much safer for everyone.

Be aware of your surroundings!
Distracted driving can be as blatant as texting or applying make-up, or can be as unintended as letting your mind wander on the five o’clock drive home. As a driver, you should always be scanning the road for the unexpected and keeping an eye on those around you. Watch out for pedestrians, and those on motorcycles and bikes that can easily be lost in your blind spot. You can’t afford to be distracted for a second!

Take a refresher course in driving.
The skills being taught to our children to be safe drivers are long forgotten by many of us who have been on the road for several years. Do you sometimes drive or turn using only one hand instead of two? Do you sometimes come to a “rolling stop” (which isn’t a stop at all and could merit a ticket if there is a police officer in the area), or maybe not fasten your seat belt for those short trips? All of these are driving basics, and no matter how comfortable you are driving, should ALWAYS be followed.

Be aware of yourself and your surroundings, and set a good example for others who may be passengers in your vehicle. Remember that the road is no place for ego-the objective, no matter what, is to arrive safely at your final destination. So relax, and enjoy the drive. Slow down-and remember to always buckle up!

A subtle line of chrome along the belt line, fog light bezels, and front and rear fascias highlight the 2010 Lincoln MKS confident and fluid exterior lines. The split wing grille is a nod to Lincoln’s heritage but evokes a modern and inviting feel, while the available 20 inch wheels help ensure this sedan looks as good going as does coming. Exquisite materials fill the interior of the Lincoln MKS from the precisely cut and handcrafted stitching of the nearly seamless dash and center console to the selection of the ornately grained genuine olive ash or fine-line ebony wood trim. Every interior surface is created with harmony of style in mind. Details. It’s what sets the Lincoln MKS apart. There’s standard interior ambient lighting with seven colors to choose from. A standard rear window power sunshade helps shield your passengers from the sun’s rays on the hottest summer day. If you are in the Wichita or Kansas area, car shopping for a Wichita Lincoln MKS or Kansas Lincoln MKS, stop by your Davis-Moore Lincoln Dealership and test drive a new 2010 Lincoln MKS today!

ELIMINATE BLIND SPOTS:
By Changing the Way You Set Your Side-View Mirrors:

Learning to set your vehicle’s side-view mirrors so you no longer have dangerous blind spots is one of the most important adjustments you can make to improve your driving safety. Once your mirrors are set correctly, it will be much easier to safely change lanes and merge into traffic, because any vehicle coming up behind or beside you will be visible in at least one of your mirrors at all times.

The rearview mirror is easy to adjust: Its purpose is to show what’s directly behind you. But many people make a crucial error when they set their side-view mirrors – creating dangerous blind spots on both sides of their vehicle.

BLIND SPOTS
Some of us were taught to adjust our side mirrors by sitting behind the steering wheel and turning the mirrors so we can see the sides of our vehicle. But this actually creates tunnel vision to the rear of the car, and overlaps much of what your rearview mirror already shows you. It also creates blind spots on the left and right sides of your vehicle, momentarily preventing you from seeing a vehicle that’s attempting to pass.

THE CORRECT WAY
To eliminate blind spots, adjust your side mirrors as follows:

1. Sitting in the driver’s seat, lean over to the left until your head touches the driver’s side window. Adjust the left side mirror outward until you can just barely see the very edge of your car – with your head still touching the glass of the driver’s side window.

2. Now, lean the same distance to your right, until your head is in the middle of the car. Adjust the right mirror outward until you can see just the very edge of the car – with your head still in the middle of the car.

3. Sitting in your normal driving position, all three mirrors should work in harmony with each other. Your rearview mirror should show what’s behind you. The left mirror should show you what’s coming up on your left, and the right mirror should show you what’s coming up on your right. Before upcoming traffic leaves your rearview mirror entirely, it should be visible in one of your side mirrors - with no blind spot, no delays.

After you make the initial adjustments, you might still need to tweak them slightly. And driving (and backing up) with your mirrors set this way may take getting used to. Learn to rely on your rearview mirror first, and get used to what your side-view mirrors are reflecting. Once you get used to it, you should find it much easier and safer to change lanes, pass other vehicles and merge into fast moving traffic. By taking the time to adjust your mirrors correctly, you’ll be able to drive more confidently - because you will have eliminated dangerous blind spots.

Americans love their cars and I am an American. I’ve been buying a new car every few years since 1959. Now, that’s not easy to do since I am only 39 years old … my birth certificate has been around since 1937 but I age more slowly.

I’ve lived all over the country in that 51 year period since my first new car. I made a career in the Air Force for 25 years and traveled quite a bit. I moved to the Wichita area upon my retirement in 1980 and have been buying my cars and having them serviced by Davis Moore since 1989.

In the “old days”, and in other locations, it was a genuine hassle to buy a new car as the negotiations were pretty much a transparent game played by the salesman and sales manager. It was uncomfortable for the buyer, took way too long and generally left one with a bad taste and a desire to not have to go through that kind of baloney again.

Getting service for your new car back then was also a hassle and in 1977, I even had one dealer in Omaha, Nebraska refuse to honor the new vehicle warranty despite my heated discussion of the irrefutable and documented facts. That situation culminated in my pledge to never buy another car of that make … a period of 32 years and counting.

Then, in 1980, I came to Wichita and bought my first car from Davis-Moore Oldsmobile. I was amazed at the difference in the service department as opposed to the experiences I had in the past at other locations. Now, you have to understand I am a mechanic by training and have 50 years of experience. That’s another difficult feat for one who is only 39 years old. The people in the D-M Oldsmobile Service Department were knowledgeable, honest, prompt and helpful as well as being technically proficient. I’ve found that to be true of the Lincoln-Mercury Service Department as well. Vehicle warranties, there, are cheerfully handled. Customers are treated with respect. Repairs, when needed are accomplished in a timely and professional manner.

Well, recently I purchased a 2010 Lincoln MKS and I have never had such a pleasant experience at a dealership before. The salesman, Tim Bernard, was very accommodating, intelligent and helpful. His supervisor, Sales Manager, Bill Schmeidler, was equally accommodating and helpful. From beginning to end my sales experience was outstanding. I was offered extended use of the vehicle while I made up my mind. The agreed to price was fair and they placed a fair value on my trade-in. No hassle, no pressure, no mind games. The whole experience was aimed at providing me with the vehicle I wanted, with the features I wanted, at the price I considered fair.

This was my 4th Lincoln and I have become accustomed to superior quality in the design and workmanship of the Lincoln automobile. The 2010 MKS is a phenomenal car and I find myself demonstrating its various features to my friends, neighbors and relatives. The THX sound system has to be experienced to be believed and the built-in GPS, and hands free Sync Travel Information is a marvel of modern technology.

I’ve been traveling with GPS for 15 years now and this Lincoln system is virtually flawless. It instantaneously acquires the required satellites and the various points of interest are comprehensive. This car even parallel parks itself.

In short, the vehicle I bought - the 2010 Lincoln MKS - sells itself but the sales and service experience has to be experienced to be believed. Davis-Moore gets my business and will continue to in the future.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Dawson Grimsley’s community spirit. His fingerprints are on many worthwhile activities and projects throughout the county.

The feeling I get is that Grimsley and his employees don’t want to make a fortune off each customer. Rather, they want to have many satisfied customers and make an honest and reasonable income from each. More importantly, they want to make each customer feel like they have been treated well. I know I do.

Take it from me, the sale and service of new cars has come a long way in the past 51 years … the way Davis-Moore Lincoln-Mercury dealership handles its business is the way it should have been at other dealerships all along.

TIPS FOR SAFE WINTER DRIVING
If you don’t absolutely have to drive when the weather’s bad and roads are icy, stay home. If you don’t have a choice, your chances of having a safe trip are better if you and your vehicle are both well prepared.

YOUR VEHICLE
Has your vehicle been winterized? Hopefully, you’ve already covered the things on this list, and your vehicle is ready for winter driving:

* Engine tuned up
* Battery checked
* Fluids at proper levels
* Freeze-resistant solution in windshield washer reservoir
* Wiper blades working properly
* Tires in good condition, with plenty of tread

Never warm up your vehicle in an enclosed area such as a garage, which may cause carbon monoxide poisoning. In fact, it’s easier on your car if you don’t allow it to idle for more than 30 seconds after you start it. And try to keep your gas tank at least half full at all times to avoid fuel line freeze up.

EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT & SUPPLIES
It’s always a good idea to carry emergency supplies in case you need them, including the following items:

* Snow shovel
* Ice scraper
* Flashlight (and extra batteries)
* Something to provide traction (sand, salt, traction mats, kitty litter)
* Jumper cables
* Warning device (flares or reflective triangles)
* A piece of brightly color cloth or ribbon (something to tie to the antenna if you get stranded)
* Something for warmth (sleeping bag, blankets, ski cap, gloves)
* First aid kit
* Bottled water
* Cell phone

DRIVING
* Before you drive, clear the ice and snow from your vehicle (including all windows, mirrors and wipers).
* Wear your seatbelt! And make sure all passengers are buckled up, too.
* If roads are snow packed or icy, slow down! Even if your vehicle has good traction in ice and snow, there will be other vehicles around you that don’t. And remember that bridges, ramps and overpasses usually freeze first.
* Don’t use cruise control if you’re driving in slippery conditions.
* Even when most roads seem OK, you may still encounter slick spots or black ice.
* If you’re driving through deep or drifting snow, don’t slow down too much: your vehicle needs momentum to keep moving.
* To avoid skids, brake gently on snow or ice. “Squeeze” your brakes in slow,steady strokes, allowing the wheels to keep rolling. If they start to lock up, ease off the brake. As you slow down, you may want to shift into a lower gear.
* Skids usually happen because your vehicle is going too fast for road conditions – so drive carefully.
* When you’re braking on a slippery road, it’s easy to “lock up” your wheels by stepping on the brakes too hard. Braking hard with non-anti-lock brakes will make the skid worse.
* If your vehicle has an anti-lock braking system (ABS), keep your foot on the pedal. If it doesn’t have ABS brakes, pump the pedal gently, pumping more rapidly as your vehicle slows down.

STUCK IN SNOW? STRANDED IN A BLIZZARD?
No one expects to slide off the road or get stranded in a blizzard – but it happens.
* If you become snow-bound, stay with your vehicle. It gives you temporary shelter and makes it easier for rescuers to locate you.
* Don’t leave your vehicle unless help is visible nearby. It’s easy to lose sight of your car in blowing snow and become lost and disoriented.
* Run the car’s engine for about 10 minutes each hour – just long enough to warm things up a little bit. During that time, run the heater and turn on an inside light to help keep warm.
* Make sure your exhaust pipe isn’t clogged. A blocked exhaust can cause deadly carbon monoxide to enter the car. If necessary, open a downwind window for air.
* Tie a brightly colored piece of cloth or ribbon to your antenna to make it easier for rescuers or other motorists to see you. If it’s dark outside, keep an interior light on to make you more visible.
* Keep moving as much as possible to keep warm.

Please drive carefully.

And remember… Spring is just around the corner!
