Did you know that an estimated 912,938 Americans are living with blood cancers, or that leukemia is the number one cause of death among children under age 20? Did you know that every 5 minutes someone new is diagnosed with a blood cancer and that every 10 minutes someone dies?
These facts are what drive the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to be relentless for a cure! The mission of the Society is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. They are dedicated to funding blood cancer research and they also provide education, patient services and patient financial aid. Of course, because they are voluntary, none of these services would be possible without monetary support from the community.
One of the Society’s largest fundraisers is the Man and Woman of the Year Campaign and Davis-Moore is proud to have nominated 2010 Candidates Trish Voth and Abe Rodriguez. Abe Rodriguez is a Private Bank Officer at Commerce Bank and has been in the industry for 14 years. In addition to LLS, Abe is the Chair for The Friends of the Wichita Art Museum Board, a Junior Achievement Board member and works with the United Way of the Plains. Trish Voth is a real estate transaction attorney who is a partner with Foulston Siefkin LLP, and has been in the industry for 12 years. In addition to LLS, Trish is the Board President of the Ronald McDonald House Charities Wichita and she is involved with the Andover Rotary, the United Way of the Plains, and both the Wichita, Kansas and American Bar Associations.
The “competition” was started to honor two children who are currently battling leukemia…this year’s honorees are Gentry Brown of Andover (age 4) and Taylor Heersche of Mulvane (age 12.) Every dollar the candidates raise counts as a vote to help determine the Man/Woman winners, but more importantly it directly affects patients like Gentry and Taylor because with every dollar raised for research a cure becomes more of a reality!
